Site Haus Back to Site Haus

Deploy to your own server

Put a website, an app or a WordPress site on a server (VPS) you or your client owns, over SSH.

You can publish any project to a server you own, or one a client gave you. Site Haus copies the site over and sets up the web address and HTTPS for you. It works for static sites, Node and Python apps, and WordPress themes.

Add a server#

  1. Open Integrations → Your own servers and choose Manage.
  2. Fill in the server's address (an IP number or a name), the SSH user (usually root) and the port (usually 22). Add a domain if you have one.
  3. Site Haus shows one command. Run it once on the server. It adds Site Haus's key so it can connect. Site Haus never asks for a password.
  4. Press Test connection. The first time, Site Haus remembers the server's identity. If a different machine ever answers on that address, the connection is refused.
  5. Press Prepare server. This installs Docker and a web server (Caddy) once. It can take a few minutes.

The server needs Ubuntu or Debian, ports 80 and 443 open, and either the root user or a user with passwordless sudo.

Deploy a project#

Open the project, choose its Servers tab, and press Deploy to this server.

  • Static sites (HTML, or sites built with Vue, React, Vite, Astro) are built here if needed and copied over.
  • Apps (Node, Express, Next.js, Flask, Django) are installed and started in Docker. Your Secrets are sent only if you tick the box.
  • WordPress themes get a real WordPress with its own database. The first deploy shows the admin login once. Use WordPress login later to see it again.

Without a domain, each site gets a free address based on the server's IP number, with HTTPS. To use your own domain, point its DNS (an A record) at the server before you deploy, then type it in the project's Servers tab.

Clients can add their own server#

In the client portal, clients get a Server tab. They add their server and run the one command. You see it in Integrations → Your own servers, marked with their name, and you do the rest.

Good to know#

  • Sites keep running if Site Haus is offline: they live on your server.
  • Removing a server here never deletes anything on it.
  • Deploying again replaces the site's files. For WordPress, the content and database are kept.
